Voice dictation for Google Docs
Google Docs has built-in voice typing, but it is limited to Docs in Chrome. DictaFlow gives you the same hold-to-talk dictation in Docs and in every other app, with custom vocabulary you control.
Windows, Mac, iPhone, iPad and Android. Free plan: 2,000 cloud words per 30-day cycle. Pro: $9/month or $84/year.
How to set it up
- Open your document and click where you want text. DictaFlow inserts at the cursor, including mid-paragraph.
- Hold the shortcut and speak. Dictate a paragraph and release. No microphone toggle to switch on and off.
- Edit with the keyboard or by voice correction. Fix any word the normal way, or use correction while speaking.
- Keep the same workflow elsewhere. The same shortcut works in Gmail, Slack, Word and anything else, so you learn it once.
Tips
- Use Docs' outline and headings for structure, and dictation for the body text.
- If you write in Firefox or Safari, where Docs voice typing is unavailable or limited, DictaFlow still works because it is a separate app.
- Add specialist terms to custom vocabulary before dictating a technical document.
What DictaFlow does not do
DictaFlow does not run Docs formatting commands such as 'select paragraph' or 'make heading 2'. It types text; you format it with Docs.
How DictaFlow works
DictaFlow is hold-to-talk dictation: hold a shortcut, speak, release, and the text is inserted into the active app at your cursor. It includes custom vocabulary, correction while speaking, and a Typing Mode that enters text as keystrokes for Citrix, RDP and fields where pasting is blocked. Standard dictation uses cloud processing; Pro adds Local Offline dictation on supported devices. See the full product facts and privacy policy.
Frequently asked questions
Is DictaFlow better than Google Docs voice typing?
They serve different needs. Docs voice typing is free and fine inside Docs on Chrome. DictaFlow is worth it if you also dictate elsewhere, want custom vocabulary or want hold-to-talk control.
Does DictaFlow work in Firefox or Safari for Google Docs?
DictaFlow is a desktop app that types into the active field, so it is not tied to one browser. Test it in your browser.
Do I need to check the result?
Yes. Speech recognition can mis-hear words, so read what was inserted before you share the document.
How much does it cost?
