DictaFlow

A Google Docs voice typing alternative

Google Docs voice typing is free and handy, but it only works in Docs, and mainly in Chrome. DictaFlow types into any app, with hold-to-talk control and custom vocabulary.

Windows, Mac, iPhone, iPad and Android. Free plan: 2,000 cloud words per 30-day cycle. Pro: $9/month or $84/year.

How to set it up

  1. Know what Docs voice typing covers. It dictates inside a Google Doc. It does not help in Gmail, Slack, Word or other apps.
  2. Install DictaFlow. Download for Windows, Mac, iPhone, iPad or Android from the downloads section.
  3. Hold the shortcut in your Doc. Speak a paragraph, release, and the text appears at the cursor.
  4. Use the same shortcut elsewhere. The same hotkey works in your email and chat, so there is one habit to learn.

Tips

  • Docs voice typing is a fine free option if you only dictate in Docs with Chrome.
  • DictaFlow suits you if you dictate across many apps or need custom vocabulary.
  • Compare with the free plan on a real document.

What DictaFlow does not do

DictaFlow does not run Docs voice commands for formatting. It inserts text. Docs voice typing, by contrast, includes some formatting voice commands.

How DictaFlow works

DictaFlow is hold-to-talk dictation: hold a shortcut, speak, release, and the text is inserted into the active app at your cursor. It includes custom vocabulary, correction while speaking, and a Typing Mode that enters text as keystrokes for Citrix, RDP and fields where pasting is blocked. Standard dictation uses cloud processing; Pro adds Local Offline dictation on supported devices. See the full product facts and privacy policy.

Frequently asked questions

Why switch from Google Docs voice typing?

If you dictate outside Docs, want custom vocabulary, or prefer hold-to-talk control, DictaFlow covers more situations.

Does it work if I use Firefox or Safari?

DictaFlow is a separate app that types into the active field, so it is not tied to Chrome. Test in your browser.

Is there a free plan?

Yes: 2,000 cloud words per 30-day cycle. Pro: $9/month or $84/year.

Will it replace Docs voice commands?

No; formatting commands remain a Docs feature.
